Welcome to the DESIRE project's webpages

The aim of the DESIRE project is to calculate the radiation levels inside the Columbus International Space Station (ISS) module, and from these estimate the doses received by astronauts and equipment. The project is sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA) and by the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB).

Method

Calculation of the radiation levels inside the ISS has so far not been done in Europe even though it is of great importance to do this, for example to be able to predict the radiation doses received by astronauts staying on the ISS for many months.

We will use the Monte Carlo program Geant4 to simulate the transport of incident particles through the walls of the space station. The flux of incident particles is well known and can be estimated for a given orbit with eg. the ESA SPENVIS package or CREME96.

Project plan

The project has the following components:

  1. Tests of Geant4 to confirm that it adequately models the relevant physics. Comparison with the NASA HZETRN tool, the Russian Monte Carlo program SHIELD, and experimental data.
  2. Implementation of the Columbus geometry in Geant4. Particle penetration studies and comparison to experimental data from eg. MIR, SilEye or, if available, another ISS module.
  3. Establishing a detailed model in Geant4 of the external radiation field in the ISS orbit. From this model and the geometry in the previous stage the radiation field inside Columbus will be calculated.
  4. Estimation of the radiation doses from the calculated radiation field. This will eventually be done in Geant4 using a model of a human body.
Progress has been made on the first component, but physics validations will be necessary throughout the entire project. Implementation of Geant4 models of Columbus and ISS is complete. Work is progressing on the third component.
