April 21 - 25, 1997 Thomas Lindblad presents a paper on NNW's and star tracking at the SPIE meeting in Orlando, Fla.

March 1997 Karina Waldemark joins us as a post-doc. Initially she is working primarily on an EU project to use sensor-NNW's to detect signs of sleep apnea.

Jan. 1997 Joakim Waldemark joins us as a post-doc. Iniitally he is working on hybrid neural networks, PCNN, and Aurora identification.

Oct. 1996-March 1997 Clark Lindsey worked on image analysis of nuclear fuel rods under a contract with the Swedish Nuclear Inspectorate (SKI). Using images obtained from a UV sensitive CCD camera under development by SKI and a Canadian group, we did a feasibility study to determine if fuel assessment (e.g. real or fake fuel) was feasible with online image processing.

Sept 2 - Sept. 7, 1996 Thomas Lindblad presented three papers, see below, at the AIHEP96 workshop in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Aug. 15 - Aug. 30, 1996 Jason M. Kinser, Assistant Research Professor at the Center for Applied Optical Sciences, Alabama A & M Univeersity visited. He worked on implementing wavelets and the PCNN algorithm on the CNAPS. See the resulting papers below.

Aug. 1996 - June 1997 Graduate student Maxim Minerskjöld will spend a year at Østfold College in Halden, Norway to work with Prof. Åge Eide on neural network applications.

June 30 - July 5, 1996 At IFAC'96 World Congress (Int. Federation of Automatic Controls) Åge Eide gave an invited paper on Celestial star determination using artificial neural network in the Neural Networks for Flying Vehicle Applications session.

Jume 2-6, 1996 Washington D.C. at the IEEE ICNN'96 conference, Thomas Lindblad give a poster presentation of the Experience with the Reactive Tabu Search as Implemented in the Totem Chip paper and will also server on a panel discussion.

May 1-May 18, 1996 Dr. Richard Ward of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee visited to develop projects concerning neural networks and data mining. Richard is the group leader of the Engineering Physics group in the Computational Physics Section.

April 15, 1996 Thomas Lindblad presented two papers (see below) in the neural networks session at the SPIE 1996 Symposium on Aerospace/Defense Sensing and Control and Dual Use Photonics, April 1996, Orlando, Fla. symposium.

Feb-March, 1996 Prof. Mary Lou Padgett of Auburn Unviersity, Auburn, Al. visited. She is a researcher in neural networks and is a leader in several NNW organizations and has organized numerous conferences and workshops. She worked here to develop areas for collaboration between our groups. She also gave a physics department seminar on the basics of neural networks.

Feb, 1996 Our regular collaborator Geza Székely from Debrecen, Hungary, was here in February. He developed code to implement the DDA (Dynamic Decay Adjustment) algorithm, similar to the P-RCE algorithm but more robust, on our CNAPS PCI card. A paper is now in preparation.

Jan. 15 - April 30, 1996 Clark Lindsey wwnt to Østfold College, Halden, Norway for two months and the Technical University of Denmark for one month on a NorFA grant. He worked on applications of neural networks to small satellite star tracking.

Dec. 1995 Clark Lindsey gave a seminar at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee on applications of neural networks in science and industry.

22-Nov.Thomas Lindblad gave a seminar on "Knowledge Discovery using Data Mining and Neural Networks" at the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory, Frescativaegen 24, Stockholm.
